TESTIMONIALS
Proof that NIE
Works
Studies in schools with at least some NIE programs did 10 percent better (on standardized tests)
than students in schools that had no NIE program.
In schools that were higher in low-income,
non-English speaking or minority students, the increase in test scores for the
newspaper group was as much as 29% higher!
In all cases, the more newspapers were used
throughout the year, the greater the gain in state and national scores.

"In fact, if there were only two things
that my students could have in the field of reading, I'd say a newspaper every day and
their library card."

At Johnson Creek, we regularly use the NIE papers in all of our Social Studies classes. We look forward to the "Design An Ad" contest and use several of your "Partners
in Education" films as regular parts of our curriculum."

This year I worked with the Daily Times on
the Design-An-Ad. This correlated well
with our reading/language curriculum in addition to meeting some of the state
standards. Dawn McBride at the Daily
Times did an excellent job with the organization of this project. In addition, there was ample information as to how
to integrate the newspaper into the curriculum.
The students were very motivated by this project. They also loved reading the local news since
several events from John Hustis Elementary were
covered. I also liked this project as I
was surprised by the number of households that do not receive a newspaper so
this was good exposure for the students.
Thanks to the Watertown Daily Times for sponsoring
this project.
